I made a stop at Amon Creek Preserve today. I had noticed the hike listing had become corrupted so it was missing some details. I decided to go back and redo the hike since I have a lot of inquiries on Amon Creek Preserve. I was so glad I did, I was rewarded with some of the best wildlife sightings I’ve ever had on a hike!

The wildlife show started as we pulled off Leslie Road into the parking area. A family of quail wandered across the roadway and we got some quick pics. I had my son along but we already went on the Badger Canyon Trail today so he opted to wait in the car (boy, did he miss out!).
I headed up to the kiosk and right away, realized there was more green than when I was here before, in the winter! (imagine that).
As I headed north, along the west side of the preserve, I found myself on the gravel road that was put in a couple years ago amongst quite a bit of controversy (see details and more on the story in a previous blog post here). I must say, workers did a pretty good job re-vegetating the area and the natural habitat appears to be thriving. As I walked quietly along the road, I heard some rustling in the brush between me and the water. I saw some fur and thought “coyotes”. I know they are very skittish and elusive. I walked forward and the rustling moved so I pulled my camera to the ready hoping to catch a glimpse. I was pretty happy how these pictures turned out. There were at least two coyotes but I’m not sure how many.
I continued on along the gravel and came to the holding pond. As I rounded the corner, I saw a jackrabbit scamper across the trail. I tried to follow but it was two steps ahead of me. As I continued up the trail, I saw more jackrabbits, this one stopped right in the middle of the trail.
As I continued on the trail, I saw more jackrabbits, this picture turned out particularly well.
The birds were calling all morning. From the moment I stepped out of the car, they were singing. As I wandered among the brush, I watched carefully for snakes, fortunately, I saw none! On the way back to the trailhead, a small critter darted across the path, I got this pic.
As I headed past the benches, there were great views over the waterway.
There were also some nice flowers to enjoy, a great day at Amon Creek Preserve. Thank you Tapteal Greenway Association and other supporters!
Gosh – how did you hike so soon!
I just left my shoulder sling on and went for it. I was getting antsy and wanted to get out!
