Directions to this hike
Yeah, I succeeded in coaxing my family for a hike in a place I’d heard about but had never ventured. I promised the family it would not be a workout like Badger Mountain or Rattlesnake and so they agreed. We parked at the trailhead. A few nice, paved parking spots at the corner of 7th and Vancouver in residential Kennewick. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of a hiking area in the middle of Kennewick but I was pleasantly surprised.
At the trailhead is a nice playground structure for kids to enjoy.
From the trailhead, we hiked up the path to the left. It is a semi-primitive but well traveled dirt trail that is easy to follow. It winds through trees and beautiful overhead canopies of brush and bushes.
There are hundreds of blackberry bushes that make for excellent trailside snacks in the right season. As we wandered along the east side of the canyon, we had glimpses of running water and standing pools.
At the south end of the trail, we passed over the creek and made our way to the west side of the canyon and the paved portion of the trail. This took us all the way back to the trailhead. My boys found all kinds of little side paths for great exploring in the underbrush. I’m sure it would be even better when the leaves are on the trees! There is a nice, grassy area along the paved trail, near the trailhead with a beautiful view of the creek where I took this picture.
This is a really enjoyable hike, simple, easy with the opportunity to enjoy some local beauty right in the heart of Kennewick.
This looks like a fun hike for my younger kids – about how long is it? A mile or two? Thanks for the fun website – excited to follow the adventures and even go on a hike or two!
Well hello there m’am! I think the girls would love this and you could take Abbey in the stroller on the paved portion. For more details on this hike, follow the link to the Zintel Canyon hike. I think the round trip distance is 1.2 miles.
