Hike Directions
In downtown West Richland, is a quick and invigorating ascent that can push your limits. I took the trip the other day and although the view was somewhat limited by fog, it was still worth the trip. The trail is still in pretty good shape but I can imagine it getting pretty soft and mushy as the year progresses as it is mostly thick sand. There was no one else around when I made my mid-day climb.
I had never been up Flattop although I had camped at the park of scouting events. I hoofed it up and made it to the summit in about seven minutes, my heart was racing around 170 as I got to the top and I was feeling good. I took a few minutes to survey the view. You can look 360 degrees (except for what looks like an abandoned round house) and see all the local mountains, Richland and Pasco and, of course, West Richland and a great view of the winding Yakima River. I shot a quick video you can watch here and actually had to make two trips up as I got back down and reached for my camera and it wasn’t there.
Fortunately, it was in a red case so I spotted it quickly as I went back up the trail and found it near the top! An enjoyable, quick day hike that would be suitable for a lunch break.
Do you Have to worry about rattlesnakes ?
Not much of a concern this time of year. When it warms up more, be on the watch, stay on trails. Enjoy, Paul
