I was startled the other day on a hike up the Canyon Trail on Badger Mountain when a few large birds flew out of the brush and across my path. I spotted this one walking through the sagebrush but I wasn’t sure what kind of bird it is.
Maybe some type of grouse? I’m hoping the more expert birdwatchers can help with identification. It turns out this is a Chukar! Thanks to some Lower Columbia Basin Audobon Society folks for their help! As I got up on the bench of the Canyon Trail, I spotted a smaller bird braving the wind as it sat atop the Lake Lewis marker. The Audobon Society folks say this little fella is a Horned Lark.
It looked like it had some yellow markings. The third unknown is an audio quiz. I hear this beautiful song frequently as I hike on Badger, I just don’t know what bird it is from, please play this video to hear the call. This one is identified as a Western Meadolark.
If you have ideas about identification for these birds, please jot me a note. Thanks, Paul
P.S. I have one more from my backyard this morning. Please listen to this call and help me with identifying the bird. Thank you! Thanks again to Ed Rykiel and Debbie Berkowitz for their identity on these birds. This last song is from a Red-Winged Blackbird.
