As you probably know from reading my blog and web site, I value the beauty that surrounds us. But, I also respect it.
It seems to be an perennial headline in the local newspaper: “Drowning in the Columbia River”. The latest example came just last week.
I value the Columbia River as one of the most beautiful landmarks that we have here. But, when I swim in it, I take precautions. This week marks the start of my swimming season in the Columbia River. A friend and I take to the water a couple of times a week for pleasure and fitness. We always swim together or with some additional friends as we did yesterday (see picture below). We also tether ourselves to flotation devices that can help us if an emergency arises and to provide visibility for others enjoying the river.
My warning is to not be stupid about recreation in the Columbia Basin! Today’s newspaper reported how the latest drowning victim apparently didn’t even know how to swim! If you can’t swim, don’t go near the water! Often, these tragedies include the use of alcohol which impairs one’s judgement ending with foolish, deadly decisions.
The Columbia River can be very deceiving. We delayed our regular swimming sessions because the water this year was higher, faster and colder. Currents flow in odd directions and can sweep you out into deep water without a warning.
Please help prevent these headlines. Enjoy the beauty that surrounds us but don’t be stupid! Know your limits, then, don’t even go near the line that divides safety from danger.
