I met Dan the other day on Badger Mountain and had a nice visit.
I came to discover he uses Badger as a training ground. He has hopes to traverse the entire Pacific Crest Trail. I saw him the other morning as I was working to beat the sunrise as I headed up the Sagebrush Trail. He was ahead of me and, try as I might, I couldn’t catch up.
Dan reports he has logged over 800 miles on Badger Mountain. That’s why I entitled this post “Dan the Marathon Man!” What a great goal for people to shoot for. It may seem massive to many of us but it is not impossible. Break it down into baby steps; if you hike the loop, up the Sagebrush Trail and back down the Canyon Trail, or vice-versa just 3 times a week, you could reach 800 miles in less than 2 years!
Okay, maybe it is a little far-fetched for many but setting a regular hiking schedule and goal is a great way to reach the dream of being in better shape or losing weight or even recovering from a heart attack or illness. (See “Inspirational” blog post for more reasons to hike)
Hopefully Dan, the Marathon Man can be an inspiration to the would-be 800 milers and those who just want to shed a few pounds and climb the stairs without being out of breath!
I logged all of most of my miles on Badger for 2011 and had 303 miles. I know I missed a few but that is okay. What a great accomplishment!
Way to go, I need to keep track myself!
