Details and Directions for This Hike
Wow, what a great place for birdwatching! I’d never been to McNary National Wildlife Refuge before so I convinced my teenage boys to join me for this new adventure and we all had a good time! We went there on a weekday and the parking lot was empty. We headed for the water which we found out is actually named Burbank Slough. As we headed along the bank, we spotted a little outbuilding and, from my previous reading, I thought it might be the birdwatching blind. Sure enough, we could watch the Canada Geese only a few feet away without them even flinching! We got some pretty cool pictures. There was a small bit of ice along the edge of the pond, my sond enjoyed throwing in a few rocks (what is it about males, water and rock throwing?). We followed the trail around the pond and were regularly startled by the sudden flight of nearby birds. The Canada Geese were out by the thousands. What really added to this hike was we were there just before dusk so the colors really came alive as the sun was getting ready to set. From what we read, there are wonderful migratory bird viewing opportunities throughout the fall, winter and spring months, we will be back!
