I was excited to take this new hike because I have driven along I-82 since I was a kid and saw the Horse Heaven Hills from Benton City to Prosser.

The weather wasn’t the greatest for the hike and the skies were a little hazy but that wasn’t going to stop me from a fun hiking adventure.
The gravel road/trail was in good shape and the views down into the valley and over the Horse Heaven Hills and wheat fields were beautiful. I’m always on the lookout for colors, other than the beautiful tans and browns of the late summer desert and I wasn’t disappointed. I saw several small, yellow flowers.
I enjoyed seeing the ridges I’ve looked at all my life as I grew up in this area. I’ve always wanted to wander up on these hills and now I get to do it!
I saw a few birds but no other wildlife. I can only imagine what the Horse Heaven Hills farmland would look like with the green of spring or the gold of late summer wheat. There was still plenty of green looking down into the lower Yakima Valley as neatly laid out crops were green with the nourishment of irrigation.
At the top of Chandler Butte, I found several communications towers with small outbuildings.
It was about 44 minutes from the parking lot to Chandler Butte as I hiked at a moderate pace. I’ll be back!
